Hope Cowan – Harp

A native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Hope Cowan currently lives and works in Houston, Texas. Ms. Cowan has a Master’s of Music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and a Bachelor’s of Music from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, both under the instruction of Paula Page.

As an orchestral musician, Ms. Cowan is the principal harpist of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. She has also played with various orchestras including the San Antonio, Baton Rouge, Victoria, Lake Charles, Brazos Valley and Southeast Texas Symphonies. Recently she was featured as a soloist with the Brazosport Symphony in Southeast Texas.

An avid chamber musician, she has appeared with SYZGY: New Music at Rice, The Foundation for Modern Music, AURA, MUSIQA and her own performing ensemble: The Deciduous Trio. An advocate for new music, Ms. Cowan frequently performs contemporary solo and chamber music. Recently she performed several pieces as part of the LaTex symposium of electronic music. As a member of the AURA Contemporary Music Ensemble she was featured several times on 91.7 KUHA Houston’s programs “The Front Row” and “Music in the Making”.

Ms. Cowan has also participated in a number of prestigious music festivals including the Chautauqua Festival Institute, Round Top Festival Institute, the Texas Music Festival, and the Avaloch Farm Institute.

In addition to her performing, Ms. Cowan teaches private lessons and harp ensemble in the Alief and Fort Bend ISDs, has a private teaching studio in the Katy, TX area, and is an instructor at the University of St. Thomas Preparatory School. She also teaches at the Houston Summer Harp Festival, a summer camp for middle school and high school harpists held at Houston Baptist University.
